I don't know if any of you hipsters have seen that new PBS show History Detectives but it's worth checking out for it's grandiose ideals and the spin they take on historical research. The things they are asked to find out about are not really earth shattering or history making, but instead seem to be fueled by the need for the owner or curator's incessant need for conversational tidbits the next time they brag about their crap. The results are usually inconclusive and they wind up going back to the "client" with a mumbled "it's more than likely" or "yeah, it's probably true." It's even more fascinating to find out that there are people famous for being experts on civil war flags or ventriloquism. They are usually introduced as being world -renowned or a "leading" expert on whatever it is they are flacking. Who decides these things? They also use Elvis Costello's Watching The Detectives as a theme song ,with all the lyrics intact. Nothing like psycho sexual murder scenarios to sell history.
